[Mid-Age Eye] Surgery for Drooping Eyelids

2026-02-20

As people enter middle age,

the eyelids droop, making the eyes look heavy,

the corners of the eyes become irritated or sore,

and because they have to open their eyes using the forehead, wrinkles form on the forehead.

Many people experience these discomforts.

I'd like to give a general overview (of sorts)

of the ways to solve this kind of eyelid drooping.

When the eyelids droop in middle age,

it is usually the outer (rear) part of the eye that droops the most,

and in severe cases, the corners of the eyes can become irritated and sore.

Some people say that the drooping makes their eyes feel heavy

and that it is hard to keep their eyes open,

and it can also make them look older,

so many people want it improved.

There are three main ways to solve this drooping of the upper eyelid.

1. Upper eyelid surgery

2. Brow lift (infra-brow excision)

3. Forehead lift

Upper eyelid surgery creates a double eyelid

and, as shown in the picture, removes the excess skin.

That resolves the drooping

and also lets you have a double eyelid.

It is a good option for people whose eyelids droop overall, from the front to the back,

or who want a double eyelid.

Brow lift surgery

does not create a double eyelid

and removes only the drooping skin, right beneath the eyebrow.

It keeps the original shape of your eyes

and cuts away only the drooping skin,

so it has the advantage of looking a bit more natural.

It is effective for people whose skin droops a lot on the outer side of the eye.

Forehead lift surgery is for people

whose eyebrows also droop

and who have a narrow space between the eye and the eyebrow.

If they have upper eyelid surgery or a brow lift,

the space becomes even narrower,

and their expression ends up looking stern.

In such cases, the eyebrows need to be lifted together, as a whole,

to improve the heavy feeling.

Each surgery may be done on its own,

or, if one alone does not solve the problem,

two surgeries may be done together,

or one at a time with an interval in between.

I'll cover each surgery in a separate post.
